Modulation put simply is “Changing keys”. To make the most of this lesson, it would help to have a basic understanding of:
Diatonic Theory and Harmony
The ability to construct any Major Key
The ability to work within Roman Numeric Notation for song analysis.
If you do not have these critical musicianship skills and would like to learn them, we have an easy to understand online site at http://rnbacademy.com where we've been teaching applied guitar and music theory using our one of a kind study program here in Texas for many years.
To start with, let's look at two Keys that we'd like to change, Let's select G and D – These two keys are a 4th apart, and a good example of our approach.
Let's take the Chords in G first:
G Am Bm C D Em F#dim G
I ii iii IV V vi viio I
Next we will do the same with D
D Em F#m G A Bm C#dim D
I ii iii IV V vi viio I
Using G lets make a Progression: I iii IV V I
G – Bm – C - D back to G
This approach involves going from G to D via the ii chord in G - We play two times through G and on the second time, instead of going back to G we will add the ii chord of D, and from there we will go to the V chord of D and finally the I of D, or D itself. From there we simply duplicate the I iii IV V and I but this time within D, and we are done...full modulation.
G – Bm – C - D – G
G – Bm – C - D – Em ← ii in D
A – (The V chord in D)
D – F#m – G - A back to D
Modulation is an effective tool in songwriting and theory and composition. One key benefit, is it keeps the music interesting. For example if the song is too long, a key change keeps it fresh and keeps the listener from becoming as tired with the same chords, which can lull a listener into boredom.
