Online Auto Insurance: Consider Comp. Coverage in Light of Weather Warnings

A advisory from the Maine Bureau of Insurance that harsh weather may be on the way should have residents checking their vehicle policies to see if they're covered for weather-related damages.

Augusta -- Free-Press-Release.com-- Dec 12, 2011 -- A recent warning from state regulators that Maine residents should brace themselves for more storms this holiday season should also serve as a caution for consumers to ensure they are properly insured against the damage that Mother Nature can do, according to Online Auto Insurance (OAI).

The Northeast has already been battered by wintry weather this year, and more of the same is expected, according to meteorologists. That should prompt anyone who is doing research on prices for auto insurance in Maine to be sure they check the feasibility of purchasing optional coverage that protects against weather-related damages.

Residents of Maine and other East Coast states who are still digging out after an October snowstorm know all about the problems that winter weather brings up.

The Insurance Information Institute (III) has predicted thousands of East Coast residents will file claims for damages on their auto and homeowner policies after a freak snow storm—the third weather-related disaster in as many months—struck the region.

And federal officials say that, after months of catastrophic weather, more bad weather is on the way.

In light of that information, OAI advises motorists to think about buying an auto policy that includes comprehensive coverage. Unlike other types of insurance, comprehensive coverage protects consumers against losses caused by deer and other animals, in addition to damages that result from fire, flooding and other weather-related events, theft and vandalism.

Comprehensive is not legally required in any state, except as part of a vehicle loan agreement, and it will involve spending a little more than you would for a bare-bones policy; but it could turn out to be a good investment for anyone who is unlucky enough to collide with a deer or have a large tree branch weighed down by snow fall on their car.
