Poetry in motion. This is probably the apt and the only way you can describe pottery as a craft. Nowadays, the humble potter along with his magical pieces have become progressive and you have online pottery.
The sheer fluidity and silky smoothness with which ordinary clay transforms into majestic looking tea pots, flower pots, cooking pots and what not is what makes the traditional art of pottery so distinctive and irresistible for all of us. It does not matter whether you are a child or a mature adult the moment you see a potter on his or her wheel the curiosity takes the better of us and we stand to gaze and once again marvel at the transformation that is taking place right in front of our eyes.
And the transformation has not been restricted to just from clay to a finished product but also onto conventional means of marketing to wholesalers to directly going online. It is true. These days you do have the presence of so many popular potters selling their handmade ware online through established web portals. This way they are able to generate as well as obtain plenty of international orders too without investing any additional money on promotion.
It is not just the potter's wheel, you have black pottery as well here!
Coming to pottery, we have been blessed with a plethora o f this craft with most of the Indian states contributing in one way or the other. While the potters wheel is predominant in its presence and sway with practically all the states starting with Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Karnataka, and so many others contributing immensely to this craft, it is the black pottery of Manipur that has caught the imagination of many. And the reasons are not far to seek.
The distinctiveness of the black pottery of the north eastern state of Manipur comes from the fact that here there is no potter's wheel involved. And this renders this pottery craft so very unique to this beautiful state that with the sole exception of South Korea there does not appear to be any overseas instance of this particular technique of pottery followed anywhere else.
The other factor that makes the black pottery art rare is that both men and women engage in its practice in equal measure.
Black pottery is a gift from the native communities who reside basically in the Ukhrul region of this state. Here, instead of the wheel, you have this serpentine stone that is brought to use in the making of these delightful and sturdy clap pots, kettles, trays and what not.
This craft is also called the Longpi pottery after the village where it is practised the most. The Tangkhul Naga tribe of this village are credited with giving birth to the black pottery craft.
