Online Wine Merchant Turton Wines introduces Moldovan wines into the UK.

February 17, 2011

Moldovan wine is made in a well established wine industry.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) February 17, 2011 -- Moldova has a vineyard area of 148,500 hectares of which 107,800 hectares are used for commercial production. The remaining 40,700 hectares are vineyards planted in villages around the houses used to make home-made wine, or "vin de casa". Many families have their own recipes and strands of grapes that have been passed down through the generations. Most of the country's commercial wine production is for export.

Online wine merchant Turton Wines has a range of fine wines from the famous Cricova vineyards. The second largest vineyard in Moldova it boasts 120 kilometres of underground tunnels each one name after the wine stored there. The temperature is maintained at about 12 °C all year round (which is perfect for wine).
Legend has it that in 1966 astronaut Yuri Gagarin entered the cellars, re-emerging (with assistance) two days later. Russian president Vladimir Putin celebrated his 50th birthday there.

Cricova Gratiesti 1990 Cellar Collection Dessert Wine
Price £17.87
Grape: Rkatsteli
Strength: 16%
Style: Sweet
Size: 75cl

Cellar Notes: this is a wine made using a method similar to making Port, with spirit added to wine that has partially fermented, whilst there is still plenty of sugar remaining. Made from Rkatsiteli, it pours a tawny colour and has an alluring aroma of sultanas, walnuts and leaf tea, with little nuances of honey and coffee. On the palate it is quite sweet, with a nice, medium-bodied freshness and plenty of lemon and orange acidity to lift it, whilst those soft, developed flavours of dried fruit, figs and honey build on the mid-palate. The finish shows a little spirity heat, but it is entirely in context and works beautifully in this wine.

Appearance: a tawny almost marmalade hue.

Aromas: a nutty raisined nose, almost fruit cake like of complexity and depth, attractive and of good quality.

Palate: a sweet lush mouthful with a delicious freshness which belies the age of the wine. The wine has a fine balanced and tremendous grace, the acidity is finely balanced and the nutty, raisined fruit evolves well in the decanter and glass.

Serving suggestions: nutty-chocolate cakes, fresh fruit, assorted fruit salads, ice-cream, jelly, mousse, fruit-cakes, cream
