Eggs were once thought to be too delicate to freeze, but embryologists have mastered a flash-freezing process known as vitrification. The process is not only cutting-edge but may provide relief to those patients who, due to personal religious or moral views, have an ethical issue with discarding unneeded embryos. Proof of egg freezing success is validated in recent studies, however it is still considered experimental. Today, the birthrate in IVF treatments from frozen eggs extracted from women under 36 is equal to that of fresh eggs. There are currently 30 million women in the United States between the ages of 20 to 34 and experts expect the popularity of egg freezing to grow in the future.

Although the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) has yet to lift the label of “experimental” from egg freezing, Samantha Pfeifer, M.D., an endocrinologist associated with the University of Pennsylvania, who heads the ASRM’s on reproductive guidelines declared this revolutionary process “...an amazing chance for women to have control over their future”. Despite their caution, ASRM is emphatic that they do not discourage egg freezing, they are simply waiting for more sufficient studies. With the number of live births being small, questions as to how long eggs can be frozen and long-term repercussions are still unanswered. Preliminary studies, however, indicate that a frozen egg will be viable for at least ten years and no increase in birth abnormalities have been reported to date.

Experts believe that this year alone, several thousand women will opt for this procedure as insurance against age, health and life issues.
