Optimum Consultancy Ltd (http://www.optimum.uk.com), a project and business management specialist, delivers a new modular station in Uckfield as part of the Department for Transport sponsored National Stations Improvement Programme.

On behalf of its client, Southern Railway, Optimum Consultancy developed a new component-led building system to be used for the replacement of small and medium sized station buildings. The internal modules for the new Uckfield station were manufactured by Britspace, at its factory in Yorkshire, to the fully detailed design provided by the Optimum Consultancy team.

Paul Trevett, Southern’s Facilities Manager, said: “The station module at Uckfield will be perfectly suited to meet the needs of Uckfield residents and passengers alike. The innovative techniques used in manufacturing and installation mean that passengers won’t have to wait too long before their much needed new station is available to use.”

Uckfield station has been serviced by a temporary building since the original ticket office was closed in 1991 and was therefore in urgent need of a new modern building.

The new station building consists of a ticket office, with fully accessible ticket window, public toilet, staff accommodation, with the ticket vending area forming part of a covered ticket hall, a café and a small veranda overlooking the Mill building and nearby River Uck.

John Orchard, Director, Optimum Consultancy Ltd, commented: “We are pleased to be carrying out work for Southern on the National Stations Improvement Programme. The benefit of a modular station is that it effects maximum change with the minimum disruption to customers and staff.”

The internal ticket office and staff accommodation modules were installed onto the prepared foundation slab in November, 2009 and the station construction work is on schedule for completion in February 2010.

A modular station has been installed at Smitham station in Surrey this month.
