Dr. Charles Martin of the Richmond Smile Center helps his patients maintain healthy lives by educating them about oral systemic health. Oral cancer is not just a disease that affects smokers. Anyone can develop this condition. Studies link gum disease not only with oral cancer, but also with various forms of cancer.
A recent study at Harvard School of Public Health reveals that men with gum disease are 63% more likely to develop pancreatic cancer than those who do not suffer from gum disease.
Another study indicates that men with a history of gum disease have a 14-percent higher overall risk of cancer, whether or not they used tobacco products.
Recent research published in the British medical journal, Lancet Oncology, found that people with gum disease ran a 36-percent higher risk of lung cancer. The study continued, showing that people who lost teeth due gum disease ran an even great risk – 70 percent. Gum disease also contributes to a 40-percent greater risk for kidney cancer and a 50-percent risk for blood cancers, such as non-Hodgkin lymphoma, leukemia, and multiple myeloma.
About: Dr. Martin has been at his practice, Richmond Smile Center, for over 30 years. He has authored several books on dentistry and dental business. Overall, Dr. Martin has spent close to 10,000 hours training in leadership, management, marketing, and clinical dentistry.

Further studies indicate severe periodontal disease increases the risk of head and neck cancers. Not surprisingly, people with gum disease are at a greater risk for oral cancer. The public may not think oral cancer is serious, but it is more deadly than people believe. Statistics show that one person dies of oral cancer every hour.
Scientists, doctors, and dentists are beginning to realize the effect good oral health and hygiene practice has on overall health. While good oral hygiene will not necessarily win the battle against cancer, studies linking periodontal disease and cancer reveal this is a good place to start.
Since April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, Dr. Martin wants to encourage patients to undergo oral cancer tests along with their six-month dental cleaning and checkup. By detecting and treating oral cancer early, the survival rate increases. An oral cancer exam could literally save your life.
