OREGON SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGISTS ASSOCIATION (OSPA) ANNOUNCES EXCELLENCE TO CHILDREN AWARDS
Portland, Oregon (October 13, 2011) – OSPA announces the annual Oregon School Psychologists Association Excellence to Children awards.

The Oregon School Psychologists Association Excellence to Children award is only awarded to those public servants who demonstrate outstanding leadership in the development of policy to educate, nurture or protect Oregon’s children. This year’s outstanding recipients are true friends to education and Oregon’s children.

http://www.osaponline.com State Senator Joanne Verger (D, SD 5, North Bend) was the chief sponsor of legislation in the Seventy-sixth Legislative Assembly to help prevent cyberbullying. Senator Verger states: “Cyberbullying comes in a variety of forms,” ... But the damage caused is just as real any other form of abuse.”
Commissioner Brad Avakian, Bureau of Labor and Industry, took the lead to craft legislation to rebuild career and technical education (CTE) in Oregon’s public schools. Commissioner Avakian states: “To regain our economic competitiveness, Oregon must ensure that every student has access to high-quality CTE options that teach emerging or in-demand job skills, ... setting sights on fields like green technology and health professions, will help prepare kids for living-wage jobs, but also show them the real-world application of the material they’re already learning in school.”
Ms. Marilyn Gense, Chair of Oregon Commission on Autism Spectrum Disorder, worked tirelessly to bring much-needed change and improvement in the service delivery to individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Ms. Gense, retired administrator and teacher, now works as a consultant in with low incidence disabilities. She also authored the book, Autism Spectrum Disorders and Visual Impairment: Meeting Students’ Learning Needs.
OSPA awarded the Oregon School Psychologists Association Excellence to Children award at the their annual fall conference at the Oregon Garden Resort, Silverton, OR. OSPA states, “This year we picked from a field of highly qualified candidates. Senator Verger, Commissioner Avakian and Chair Gense stood out as champions for Oregon’s children. “
