Oriental Logistics’ Green Ideas

Oriental Logistics, being an enterprise committed to social responsibility, not only dedicated ourselves to providing customers with excellent logistics services, but also strived for environmental protection. Therefore, Oriental Logistics summoned the staff from all departments and established the Green Committee to promote and implement green logistics. Green logistics has been the main trend of evolution in logistics industry that compiles a series of environmentally sustainable logistics activities through revolution in transportation, warehousing, repacking, loading/unloading, distribution processing, etc. to pursue the goal of lessening pollution and reducing resources utilization. Some people think that green logistics is no more than a concept that would not bring any cost effectiveness and may even increase operational cost. Some others think that green logistics is only concerned with the government but not the enterprises. In fact, enterprise should make profit and at the same time demonstrate good image and faith and execute social responsibility. Oriental Logistics recognized this truth and we are all committed to green logistics.

The environmentally friendly ideas of Oriental Logistics include:

Promote recycling and using eco-friendly products, lessen pollution and protect the environment
In recent years, Oriental Logistics is gradually turning internal (e.g. purchase requisition) and even external (e.g. customer’s invoice) documents into electronic format, reducing paper usage with the ultimate goal of “No Paper” operation.

For the reusable things, every year Oriental Logistics collects used book, clothing, etc. and donates to the charities. This could not only help the people in need, but also help producing less waste. Moreover, apart from the conventional paper, plastic and metal recycling, Oriental Logistics also organizes rechargeable battery and glass recycling. Proper handling of rechargeable battery could reduce land pollution and glass could be recycled into “glass brick” that serves as eco-friendly building element. The damaged wooden pallets used to be delivered to landfill are also transferred to the wood recycling factory to maximize their usage.

Reduce material and energy utilization
In daily operation, Oriental Logistics implemented various energy saving practices, including switching off partial electrical appliances like lighting and lift in non-rush hour, maintaining air-conditioning at temperature not lower than 23°C , setting the lighting of external wall company signage to be turned off before midnight. Oriental Logistics is also researching on the implementation of solar energy system at the top of building to generate electricity and substitute part of the public electricity.

Besides, Oriental Logistics with its staff has been actively participating in the “Earth Hour” campaign held by the World Wild Fund (WWF) on the last Saturday of March every year and is one of the few participants in the logistics industry. All the participants turn off lights at 8:30~9:30 pm to express their concern to the worldwide climate change.

Reduce emissions from vehicles to improve air quality

The fleet of trucks is the critical operational tool of Oriental Logistics. To reduce emissions from vehicles, Oriental Logistics is gradually replacing the old diesel vehicles with vehicles that comply with the prevailing statutory emission standard for newly registered vehicles, which is now Euro IV standard. During delivery order arrangement, first priority is given to the shortest delivery route to avoid unnecessary emissions. Oriental Logistics also encourages the staff to use public mass transit system like bus and railway, and management staff to replace overseas business trip with video conference, to help reducing air pollution.

Support environmental protection scheme through participation in social campaigns

In 2010 April, Oriental Logistics joined the Glass Bottle Recycling Campaign held by Hong Chi Association and funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. Hong Chi Association set up collection bins for glass waste produced by nearby residential and commercial sectors. Hong Chi trainees are deployed to collect used glass bottles and send them to a local construction plant, where they will be crushed into glass sand (as a substitute for river sand) for the production of eco-bricks. The campaign does not only promote environmental protection, but also provides opportunities for the Hong Chi trainees to participate in the promotion work, delivering great meaning.

As a responsible enterprise, Oriental Logistics only assigns competent chemical waste treatment centre to collect and handle the expired chemical goods to ensure the chemical waste does not pollute the land, air and sea.
