A hip fracture, especially in women over 70 years, it could mean something more than an episode that make it difficult or prevents their ability to walk. Hospitalization, surgery and immobility associated fracture, can lead to complications involving a higher risk of death within a few months after the incident. The most effective solution is to prevent fractures at all costs.
The researchers found that women aged 65 to 69 years of age who have fractures are five times more likely to die within a year that the women of the same age who have not suffered a fracture, while the risk doubled when the bone is broken after 70 years of age.
From the 80, however, women showed the same risk of death within one year, regardless of whether they had broken a hip or not, but after that age, for women who had excellent health a hip fracture almost tripled their risk of dying within a year.
Among women who fracture a hip, more than half of the deaths occurred in the short term during the three months after the fracture, and nearly 75 percent in the first six months after the episode.
