Why is there so much violence in our playgrounds and schools? I want my children to be safe in school again.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Boynton Beach, Florida, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) January 13, 2011 --

The well-known phrase, it takes a village to raise a child keeps ringing in my ear. With the No Child Left Behind and standardized testing taking we have the village helping our children with their educational needs, but other necessities are still behind. One such area of need involves instruction and support for our children in successful living, character education and social skills inside and outside of their schools. These life skills give each child a moral compass to guide them through life and social situations. These taught skills structure their behavior. Some time ago schools began to stop encouraging the teaching of moral development. My guess is this all happened when we stopped prayer, and being able to speak about God, our faith thus character in our schools.

I would hope that lawmakers and educators are shuffling to find answers to address this rising trend of school-based violence. I am afraid that is far from the fact. My daughter was a victim of a year and a half of violence in the second grade. Yes, second grade. I have numerous emails back and forth with teachers and administration. Once the administration accused my daughter of lying about the violence. In another email the principal told me that he notified all of the children involved in her torture. Yes, there was more than one child abusing my daughter on a daily basis. I found out that same day NO one was notified, not one disciplinary notice was sent home for the entire year and a half she was abused. I have pictures of the bruises and a school police report filed for two separate incidents. I do not understand how the school thinks that the parents can make a difference at home if they are never notified. We as parents are responsible to teach our children love and kindness. We are responsible to teach our children how to have healthy relationships with others. It is the schools job to report and discipline any ill behavior they have seen or have been reported.

We have to accept that our schools are not going to teach or back up any social behaviors we are teaching or desire to be taught to our children. I feel the key is to help kids identify their morals and values and have an enforcement system in place. Without this training, children will never be able to find their way in this difficult world. This is the failure we are witnessing on continual path on the news every day. You might ask me how? How do we take the reins back and make these changes? Easy- DO IT. Start a Family Plan today! A family plan is a system with family rules, boundaries, expectations, allowance and The Consequence System. You can find out more at Parent in Peace

Schools do not and will not ever have the right to tell our children what to believe. Those days are gone with the wind. One thing our schools can and in my opinion must do is teach empathy. When children are repeatedly taught true empathy, how could they become bullies? The recent outbreak of school violence and careless bullying is in part due to the failure of schools to provide children with these social skills. If parents Implement the Family Plan at home and our schools provide lessons in social skills teaching empathy, it will go a long way towards shaping our children to be the loving, confident, compassionate, successful adults we desire them to be.
