Virginia Beach -- Free-Press-Release.com-- Oct 5, 2011 -- “Explaining how American education can succeed is the main mission of Improve-Education.org,” says Bruce Price, founder of the site. “Once we understand what went wrong, then we can fix it. Truth is, most of our problems are the direct result of using flawed theories and methods.”
“Here’s my fairly depressing conclusion. Our Education Establishment pretends to be a smart elite interested in the education of children. In reality, I believe the top educators are preoccupied with social engineering. As a result, they end up skimping on their real job -- education. They can’t seem to get away from their ideological compulsions. In the process, they dumb down the schools, and their own profession.”
Improve-Education.org’s broader goal is to be a strategic ally to every person and group trying to make sure young Americans don’t grow up to be ignorant Americans. “I’m especially rooting for charter schools and homeschooling,” Price says. “We need more diversity in education and more local control.”
Improve-Education.org offers dozens of original, clearly written articles on subjects as diverse as robots, Latin, birds, history, poetry and design. There’s lots of lively intellectual content for teachers, parents, students, and general readers.
Two areas receive special emphasis at Improve-Education.org: A) the well-known, highly-promoted educational methods that never seem to work as promised are aggressively dissected; and B) the common reading methods that have resulted in widespread illiteracy are thoroughly analyzed.
A) FLAWED THEORIES AND METHODS DECONSTRUCTED:
“34: The Con In Constructivism”
“36: The Assault On Math”
“45: The Crusade Against Knowledge”
“49: How Do We Learn? How Should We Teach?”
“51: Learning Styles: How Educators Divide and Conquer”
“56: Top 10 Worst Ideas in Education” --best place to start
“57: Cooperative Learning...Another Gimmick?”
“58: The Worst and Best Ways To Teach A Poem”
“59: Critical Thinking -- If Only”
B) FLAWED READING THEORY EXPLAINED: A second large group of articles analyzes why we have 50,000,000 functional illiterates:
“21: A Tribute to Rudolf Flesch”
“30: The War Against Reading”
“33: How To Help A Non-Reader to Read”
“37: Whole Word versus Phonics”
“42: Reading Resources” --best place to start
“44: The Myth of Automaticity -- Why Whole Word Won’t Work”
“54: Preemptive Reading -- Teach Your Child Early”
“These articles are essential research for anyone in education,” Price maintains. “The Education Establishment is able to keep its bad methods in play for so many decades precisely because these sophistries are hard to see through. Most parents don’t have a chance; and the teachers forced to use these methods typically don’t understand why their students are not doing well.”
“All my life,” Price notes, “I’ve been fascinated by what works. I don’t think there can be overriding theories. You watch what the most successful teachers and schools do. You try different ideas. You keep the ones that get the best results. It’s not rocket science. All religions pretty much say the same thing--to have a successful life, love God. Education presents a parallel dynamic; but here, you have to love knowledge. Everything good follows from that.”
Bruce Deitrick Price is the author of five books, a member of Mensa and PEN, and is listed in Who’s Who in America 2012. He has 250 education articles on more than a dozen sites, including 55 book reviews on Amazon and 50 videos on YouTube (their combined views just went over 540,000). A book that appeared in March, “Faces of Learning,” edited by Sam Chaltain, features 50 teachers, politicians, thinkers, etc., Price among them. His experimental art was on the cover of Computer Graphics, Feb., 2011.
“The more I studied education,” Price concludes, “the more I realized it resembles a crime scene. You have a lot of injured people, a lot of mysteries, a lot of perps still walking free. Explaining all the misconduct is for me a fascinating challenge. The so-called experts in control of public education are not very interested in what most parents mean by ‘education.’ So the public has to take charge at the local level. The mainstream media could do so much more to help. I always tell people, join my crusade or start your own any way you can. We are wasting a vast amount of money but getting poor results. We can easily do better. That’s the message at Improve-Education.org.“
