Ayrshire, Scotland, 6 January 2012--Ayr-based visual communications experts Owen Kerr Signs ended the year 2011 on a high note, firstly by erecting the signage for The Stage Door, the new café bar at the Gaiety Theatre, and then once again sponsoring and running the Owen Kerr Signs Christmas Banner Competition for schoolchildren in Ayrshire.
The improvement works underway at the Gaiety will create a new fully functioning café/bar and box office as the first stage towards the reopening of the theatre complex.

Ian Welsh, Chair of the Ayr Gaiety Partnership, said: “We are keen to re-establish the Gaiety Theatre in Ayr as a must-visit venue for local people and visitors to the area, and the opening of a fully licensed café/bar will give them their first chance to come through our doors since the theatre closed in 2009.
“The Gaiety lies at the heart of the town, and the new café/bar will be a welcome place to meet – whether for morning coffee, a light snack, lunch, or dinner or just a couple of drinks.
“This is yet another step forward in our exciting project to reopen the Gaiety and I hope that, once the café/bar opens, as many people as possible will pop in and enjoy this fantastic new facility for the town.”
Councillor Margaret Toner, South Ayrshire Council's Portfolio Holder for Economic Development, Tourism and Leisure added: “The opening of the new style café/bar at the Gaiety will bring a very welcome boost to our local economy. It will create jobs and provide a new place for people to meet and enjoy themselves in colourful comfortable surroundings.
“The café/bar is conveniently situated close to parking and the bus station, so residents and visitors coming into Ayr town centre, day or night, will be able to easily get access and I'm sure it will prove to be a popular place to go.”
Commenting on completing the signage for the Stage Door café restaurant at the Gaiety Theatre, Owen Kerr said: “When I left school in 1980 I served my time as a Scenic Artist with Ben Popplewell & Sons Scenic Studios based in River Street, Ayr.
“I worked on scenery for Theatres all over Scotland but spent much of my time painting backdrops on the paint rail high above the stage at Ayr Gaiety. I left Popplewell’s to start my own sign making business in 1983 and now almost 30 years later own and run Ayrshire’s biggest and longest established sign and display company.
“The experience I gained whilst working for Popplewell’s has proved invaluable throughout this time and is the foundation of my sign-making skills.
“I have never forgotten the great times I had and the interesting people I met whilst painting and building scenery. Ayr Gaiety has always been close to my heart and it’s great to be involved in the renaissance of this famous Scottish Theatre.”
Owen Kerr Signs Christmas Banner Competition
Every year Owen Kerr Signs runs a competition for school children to design a banner to go up in Ayr as part of the Christmas festivities.
