Baltimore, Maryland, February 15, 2011 --- The personal savings rate in America is nearly 0 and most Americans are not saving adequately for retirement. The sad part is, this trend is not likely to improve because many American’s don’t value saving money or even know how to get started. As a result, many children never learn positive money values that emphasize saving and investing. But there’s hope. During National America Saves Week (February 20th – 27th) author James A. Merritt is offering 5 simple ways parents can inspire children to start the habit of saving. These steps will be shared throughout February on the Story Time Book Tour sponsored by M&T Bank. On the tour, Mr. Merritt will read copies of his children’s book Spencer’s First Dollar and share principles of saving and charity instead of spending.

“ Children as young as 3 can appreciate the concept of saving money,” said James A. Merritt, author of Spencer’s First Dollar; the children’s book that presents money as a tool not a toy. “Like any other habit they imitate, if parents emphasize it the children will do it.” Introducing small positive habits for children can set the groundwork for a lifetime of saving and investing. Here are FIVE quick and easy projects:

1. Fill coin wrappers for fun. 2. Hunt and gather while cleaning the house to collect and save change. 3. Take excess change to public coin counting machines. 4. Make and decorate a piggy bank with your child. 5. Read children’s books that talk about money and saving. BONUS: Open a bank account for your child, most are FREE!
Everyday is an opportunity to expose your child to saving and the value of money. If you haven’t, take advantage of National America Saves Week.

James A. Merritt is the author of Spencer’s First Dollar and the forthcoming Spencer’s First Bank Account. More tips on teaching a child to save can be found at www.spencersfirst.com
