The deliberations of Pat Robinson, the prominent TV evangelist and ‘amateur seismologist’, has generated a tumult of controversy, as Whoopi Goldberg, roasted Pat Robinson for his stance, calling him a Pharisee.
“God is even angrier with them than He is with the people of Haiti, who entered a pact with the devil,” says Robinson. The Chilean 8.8 earthquake should serve as a warning.
The host of ‘The 700 Club’ is “Praying that the people of Chile will heed this warning, and never again blaspheme against God and international free-market commerce by nationalizing their most precious natural resources.”
Robinson sees the cause of God’s anger as the persecution of a great hero who rid their land of godless communists. “If I had to guess, I’d say it must have to do with Chile’s persecution and attempted prosecution of their great former leader and a personal hero of mine, Augusto Pinochet – who, it should be noted, had never been convicted of a crime when the Lord called him home three years ago.”
Robinson blamed the United States support for abortion rights as the cause of the problem after Hurricane Katrina. Later he issued an apology.
"If I'm hearing right, gold will go to about $1900 dollars an ounce and oil to $300 a barrel," Robertson said on January 1st 2009. Americans would broadly accept socialism, yet despite these predictions, he said that economically, "Things are getting ready to turn around."
Robinson is the founder of various organizations and corporations, including the Christian Broadcasting Network, the American Centre for Law and Justice, Flying Hospital Inc., International Family Entertainment Inc., and many more.
His commercial interests include media holdings in Asia, the United Kingdom and Africa. He produced and marketed a weight-loss shake, which he advertised widely on The 700 Club. He paid $520,000 for a colt named Mr. Pat, as a breeder of thoroughbred horses.
The Virginia-Pilot reported Robertson had wide business dealings with Liberian president Charles Taylor, who gave Robertson the right to mine diamonds in Liberia’s southeast mineral-rich region. Operation Blessing planes were used to haul diamond-mining equipment to Robertson’s mines in Liberia, for Robertson’s Freedom Gold, Ltd.
In 2010, a spokesman for Robertson said the company’s arrangement was that the Liberian government holds a 10% equity interest in the company and Liberians could purchase at least 15% of the shares, after the exploration period was complete.
It is believed that Robertson has financial links to former president Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire.
In 1999 Robinson attempted unsuccessfully to enter a joint venture with the Bank of Scotland, to provide financial services in the United States.
Robinson unsuccessfully campaigned to be the Republican Party’s presidential nominee in 1988. He no longer serves in an official capacity for any church.
It is estimated that Robinson is worth over $200million. Some sources say he is a billionaire.
