http://www.internet-consulting-services.com/go/cs In the early morning hours on May 24th, 2010 He went to sleep. He fell asleep with his legs crossed (like when sitting in the Lotus position). About an hour later he woke up because his legs had gone numb (asleep). He straightened his legs out, and moved them around to get the circulation going again, he didn’t think anything about it at that point. He woke up again a couple of hours later to use the bathroom. When he tried to stand up, his left leg collapsed and he fell to the floor. You see, his left leg never regained feeling, and he lost motor control below his knee. After he started to recover from the initial pain of the fall, he crawled to the bathroom. Then he had to crawl back to his bed, and climb back up on the bed. That is where he left his cell phone. Once he got back up on the bed, he called 911 for an ambulance. The ambulance took him to the emergency room of a local hospital.
While in the hospital he was seen by an emergency room doctor. He told the doctor he couldn’t feel anything below his knee. He continued to explain that he could feel everything above and including his knee. He added that he could still move his knee, hip, and thigh.
The emergency room doctor told him;
What you are describing is impossible. The human nervous system doesn’t work that way. If you can feel and move your upper leg, you can feel and move your lower leg. We're going to get you something to eat, I'll give you a prescription for some anti-anxiety medication, a pair of crutches, and we're going to send you home.
A few hours later he was discharged from the hospital ER, and sent home in a taxi, with a pair of crutches. He went home in the taxi, but even with the crutches he couldn’t walk. He had never regained feeling or motor control below his knee in his left leg. So he went back to the hospital in the same taxi. This time they checked him in and started running scans, taking x-rays, sonograms, and other tests. Finally about a week later they diagnosed his condition as compartment syndrome. The hospital told him they wanted to perform a minor operation on his leg to relieve the pressure, and he agreed. The operation was not successful. He was told that the only thing that could be done was to amputate his leg. He asked; what happens if I don’t? At that point he was told there were three possible outcomes as a result of not having the leg amputated:
1.) His leg would never get better! It would just be a dead weight hanging off of his knee.
2.) The condition could get worse, and he could lose more than just his lower leg.
3.) The condition could get worse, and he could die!
On June 4th 2010 his left leg was amputated just above the knee!
He was released from the hospital on July 3rd 2010, and is still recuperating. He has a temporary, or training prosthetic leg now, and is currently going through physical therapy to learn how to walk again.
