(Free-Press-Release.com) April 8, 2011 -- FLEMING ISLAND - As a practicing fitness professional one question arises more than any other, “Can you help me lose weight?” The answer to that is “Yes, I can... and no, I can’t.”

I can guide a client to lose the weight, but in the end it’s really up to the individual to choose the lifestyle changes necessary in order to reverse the 5, 10, 15 or more years of bad habits and abuse they have put their bodies through.

Most people don’t like to hear this.

We have the ability to control the most important aspect of our life, our health, and we should do it.

Three of the areas that largely determine our health are completely within our control. The first is nutrition.

We take for granted the wisdom of the benefits of a low fat diet, but it wasn’t always common knowledge - - but we know better now.

Remember, what your body looks like in twenty, thirty or fifty years is determined by what you feed it today.

Clinically, a person becomes obese when the amount of work he or she does is not proportional to the amount of calories coming from food. Too many calories = energy not consumed = stored fats.

Now, the best weapon that we have to battle this menace is actually very simple.

The answer is exercise.

Modern science seems to have pushed exercise aside in favor of high-tech solutions to flab and love handles.

Diet pills, gastric bypass and liposuction are some of the most sought after remedies for obesity.

It does help an obese person get rid of fat but the improvement is only limited to looks.

It doesn’t improve cardio vascular health, strength or muscle tone, and it doesn’t improve one’s immune system.

But exercise does and it’s simple and effective.

That 400 pound bench press won’t matter if your arteries are clogged, nor will your 3 hour marathon benefit you if your arms are too weak to help you out of bed some days. Just look at the big picture and make sure when you exercise you have a balanced approach.

The third aspect of your healthy triangle should be abstinence from drugs and other chemicals that can negatively impact your longevity.

The most used “drug” comes in the form of cigarettes. Anyone remotely connected to the fitness industry shouldn’t smoke but even many fitness buffs are hooked, and why not? Those cancer sticks are addictive.

But even more powerful than nicotine is the evidence against it.

One can read scores of pages of data about the evils of smoking, but I prefer to keep it simple with my clients by asking them to remember just one phrase: If you smoke, it will kill you. This isn’t being dramatic folks, it’s the truth. Excessive alcohol not only wreaks havoc on your system, but it is often accompanied by junk food, sugary mixers, and cigarette smoke. A drink or two isn’t bad and may even benefit you, but know when to say when.

So whether you are a competitive athlete, have recently joined a gym, or are even an overworked mom who thinks she has no time for exercise, take time to truly prioritize your goals.

Take some time to visit a local nursing home or hospital and maybe it will put things in perspective.
