http://www.petsforpatriots.org “Utah Animal Adoption Center is honored to be a part of the Pets for Patriots program” says Karen Wildfoerster, Executive Director of the Center. “Anything that we can do to help the men and women who have served our country and fulfill our mission of finding loving, forever homes for our cats and dogs is a remarkable and rewarding opportunity for us.”
The Utah Animal Adoption Center will extend a 50% discount on any Pets for Patriot adoption, as well as a bag of pet food and slip leash collar.
Eligible adoptions include a dog or cat, at least two years old, dogs over 40 pounds regardless of age, and special needs pets. Joining Pets for Patriots is free.
“We’re delighted to have these strong partnerships that will allow us to give back to veterans and service members in the greater Salt Lake City area,” says Beth Zimmerman, founder and executive director of Pets for Patriots. “In addition to connecting a veteran and a pet for mutual companionship, we reduce the overall costs of pet ownership and make it less likely an adopted animal will be surrendered.”
Area veterans who adopt through Pets for Patriots at Utah Animal Adoption Center will be able to choose from two excellent participating veterinary practices for ongoing, discounted care: Animal Care Center, serving Bountiful and Salt Lake City, and Willow Creek Pet Center, which serves Salt Lake City, Sandy and Cottonwood Heights. Both hold the prestigious AAHA accreditation, certifying they meet the highest standards of veterinary medicine.
“Every eight seconds, a shelter dog or cat loses its life simply because no one adopts them. At the same time, our veterans and service members benefit tremendously from the joy of a companion pet,” says Dr. Pam Nichols, owner of Animal Care Center. “We joined Pets for Patriots to support the adoption of these at-risk pets by veterans in our community – our neighbors – by offering high-quality, discounted care for their pets."
For any pet adopted through the Pets for Patriots program, Animal Care Center will extend an ongoing 15% discount off all veterinary fees.
Dr. Nichols adds, “These pets are the most misunderstood, and so deserving of a loving home. And we love the idea that our veterans are being motivated to adopt these wonderful animals. We’re proud to contribute to this union.”
Willow Creek Pet Center is equally proud to be a veterinary partner and offers an ongoing 10% discount to Pets for Patriots members who adopt through the program. Owner and veterinarian Dr. Richard Campbell is himself a veteran, and many employees at Willow Creek have family members who are serving or have served in the military.
“We understand the emotional bond between animals and their humans, and just how much they need each other,” says Dr. Campbell.
The doctor notes that many people surrender their pets when the novelty of pet ownership wears thin or the animal becomes sick. “These pets deserve the same unconditional love and support that they give us,” he says. “We hope to help create lifelong bonds between those who put their lives on the line every day and those who have no voice.”
Individuals are eligible from any United States armed forces and at any stage of their careers. Those interested in the program must first apply through Pets for Patriots and provide proof of their military service. Approval typically takes two business days, after which veterans can work with the charity’s Utah partners for assistance in choosing their new best friend and for ongoing, reduced cost care.
