http://www.petsforpatriots.org/ “The Carteret County Humane Society is honored that we will be participating in the the Pets for Patriots program,” says Executive Director, Candace Christopherson. “Our local Marines are dear to us and they visit our shelter often. They are heroes to our homeless pets by their volunteer work and by adopting from us. We are confident that together with Pets for Patriots we will be able to place even more homeless pets in loving forever homes. One paw at a time, we’re changing the world.”
The Carteret County Humane Society will extend a discount on any Pets for Patriot adoption: a $35 adoption fee for dogs and $25 for cats.
Pets for Patriots arranges access to discounted veterinary care in order to help make pet adoption more affordable for veterans, and allow them to enjoy the comfort, health benefits and emotional support a companion pet can provide.
For any eligible pet adopted through the Pets for Patriots program, Arendell Animal Hospital will extend an ongoing 10% discount off all veterinary fees. The practice is a full service veterinary facility offering experienced, compassionate and high quality care to North Carolina’s Crystal Coast residents.
“We joined Pets For Patriots because they find homes for those shelter pets that are usually hard to place related to their age, or health status,” says Dr. Richard Hawkes, DVM and owner of Arendell Animal Hospital. “Arendell Animal Hospital is proud to be part of their program because we are able to work together to help place a pet in a military home that may therapeutically assist a veteran trying to cope with returning to life after war, to enrich the lives of an injured veteran, to keep a military member or their spouse company and help keep loneliness at bay.”
Individuals are eligible from any United States armed forces and at any stage of their careers. Eligible adoptions include a dog or cat, at least two years old, dogs over 40 pounds regardless of age, and special needs pets. Joining Pets for Patriots is free.
“We support responsible pet adoption by both active duty and separated military personnel,” says Beth Zimmerman, Pets for Patriots founder and executive director. “With the help of our local partners, we hope to give many wonderful, last-chance pets a second chance at life with a service member or veteran.”
Those interested in the program must first apply through Pets for Patriots and provide proof of their military service. Approval typically takes two business days, after which veterans can work with Pets for Patriots Camp Lejeune area partners for assistance in choosing their new best friend and for ongoing quality care.
