Suzann Pettersen had the perfect Solheim Cup warm-up as she stormed to a six-stroke victory at the Ladies Irish Open – held at Killeen Castle, the host of September’s Anglo-American clash.
The Norwegian had an incredible 17-under-par weekend, including a course-record 63 on Saturday and a final-round 64, to finish six clear of Spaniard Azahara Munoz and seven ahead of England’s Melissa Reid and Irish-born American Alison Walshe. In all rounds he played with Honma BERES MG802 Iron Set.
“It’s been a great week, it’s been a short week,” Pettersen told the Ladies European Tour website, referring to how she only flew to the Emerald Isle on Thursday – the day before the first round.
“I just really like the way this course is playing, a little bit firmer. I played great with my putter and it was really nice and hot.”
The 30-year-old had started the day tied for the lead with Dewi Claire Schreeful, but the Dutchwoman triple-bogeyed the par-5 second and never recovered as she slipped back to a tie for 16th.
Pettersen almost tied her own course record, but her eight-foot birdie putt at 18 just slipped past the cup, but the packed gallery were on their feet to applaud a superb weekend performance which earned the Oslo-born star the €60,000 first prize.
“I didn’t think I had to go 17 under but I tried to take my own, I think it was a course record yesterday and on the last there I tried to at least give myself a chance to tie it,” Pettersen added.
“You’ve just got to set your own goals when you feel like you are stretching to the field. It’s nice if you have everything under control with two or three holes to play.
“This is my second win in the Irish Open. Last year I was very disappointed with the way I performed so it was nice to come back and perform to my standard.”
