(Free-Press-Release.com) November 30, 2011 --
This Friday, December 2nd will be the launch of "The Pigeon Presents: The Philadelphia Poetry Slam" at Media Bureau Network located at 725 N. 4th Street in Northern Liberties. A poetry slam is a competition between poets performing original work, judged by members of the audience. The monthly event will be held every first Friday; poets may sign up at 8:30pm, show starts at 9pm.
The Pigeon Presents: The Philadelphia Poetry Slam is organized and co-hosted by Jacob Winterstein and Aleysha Wise (Ms. Wise) who met in 2008 as members of Philadelphia’s inaugural poetry slam team. Ms. Wise is the 2008 and 2009 Philadelphia Grand Slam Poetry Champion.
Poetry slams feature the best of poetry, theater, story telling, hip-hop, comedy and drama. The content and styles are as diverse as the people of our great city. This poetry slam is three rounds with eliminations after each round. Poets will be competing for a spot in our semi finals & then grand slam finals.
Top finishers in the grand slam will represent The Pigeon and Philadelphia at the Southern Fried poetry slam in Tampa FL. Poets will also have the opportunity to compete to represent Philadelphia at the Individual World Poetry Slam, Women of the World Poetry Slam and the National Poetry Slam.
Coinciding with the launch of the monthly slams is a web series of 1 on 1 Slams. Jacob and Ms. Wise take the slam experience to the street and ask three random pedestrians to watch two poets perform a poem and pick their favorite. The first 1 on 1 slam features two Philadelphia natives. Hasan Malik appeared in HBO’s Russell Simmons Presents Brave New Voices as a member of Philadelphia’s Youth Poetry Movement. Warren Longmire is an alumnus of UPENN’s Excelano Project and two-time Philadelphia Slam team member.
