Phoenix, Arizona --- September 26, 2011 Is this date correct --- This year, hundreds of customers have joined the Phoenix Rescue Mission and Bill Johnson’s Big Apple restaurants for the “Phoenix Feed One.” The campaign is designed to help feed the hungry in the Phoenix community. So far 1,000 people have gone to the restaurant, enjoyed a meal, and at the same time helped the Mission feed the hungry.

But as the end of the campaign nears, 1,500 more diners are needed to reach the goal of 5,000 meals donated.

“Nobody deserves to be hungry,” has become a popular saying inside the walls of the Phoenix Rescue Mission over the 59 years that they have been serving the homeless community.

Bill Johnson’s Big Apple restaurants are celebrating their 55th anniversary by partnering with Phoenix Rescue Mission in the month of October to say “no” to more empty stomachs.

“There’s nothing better than the satisfied feeling of being full, especially after eating a plate of slow-cooked BBQ,” says Jay A. Cory, Phoenix Rescue Mission President and CEO. “But for some members of the Phoenix community, being full is a luxury. Many homeless men, women and children that come through our Mission can’t afford to be full, let alone have three meals a day.”

By visiting any of the five participating restaurants, a person can provide one hot meal and compassionate care for only $1.92. Or, an individual can enjoy their meal and simply add a $1.92 to the bill and get a $5 gift card to be used on their next visit.

“This allows a simple family outing or dinner to be transformed into an opportunity to change the lives of those less fortunate,” said Cory. “While they are there, the individuals can add their names to the wall display of generous donors who are making a difference in Phoenix.”

The Phoenix Rescue Mission offers three meals daily, a 24-hour walk-in center, showers and clean clothing, 150 emergency shelter beds nightly, a 31-bed Residential Addiction Recovery Program for homeless men, a 66-unit Residential Addiction Recovery Program for homeless women and their children, a Career Education Center, Chapel services, and referral information. The Mission serves thousands of children and families at special events throughout the year, providing food, clothing and other items they otherwise would not receive.
