PIONEER VALLEY DENTAL DENTIST PROVIDES TIPS ON GOOD ORAL HEALTH

November 21, 2011

Not taking care of your teeth can have serious effects on your overall health. Proper dental care is a must.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) November 21, 2011 -- If you have an unhealthy mouth, there’s growing evidence that this condition could worsen medical conditions like heart disease, stroke and diabetes. According to Pioneer Valley Dental’s dentist, Dr. Kim Maki, “Healthy dental habits, a good diet, regular professional dental care and smart lifestyle choices translate into a healthier life and better appearance.”

Dr. Maki suggests that lost teeth should always be replaced, either with fixed or removable dentures or with dental implants. “If you don’t replace these teeth, your overall health can be at risk,” she says.“Plus, everyone, regardless of age, should be on the lookout for bleeding gums, visible root surfaces and loose teeth. These are usually signs of periodontal (gum) disease. This condition is caused by the bacteria in dental plaque. If this plaque isn’t removed through tooth brushing and flossing, it can result in gums that bleed easily. This deposit is removed through professional teeth cleaning. If the condition isn’t treated, teeth can be lost, bacteria can get into your bloodstream, and your overall health could suffer.”

Dr. Maki notes that in addition to brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day and replacing your toothbrush every three to four months, it’s important to drink fluoridated water throughout your life. Smokers should also try to kick the habit since it increases problems with gum disease, tooth decay and loss, impacts healing after dental procedures and can shorten the life of dental implants.

“Whether you have all of your teeth or complete dentures, it’s still important that you have regular dental checkups. Your dentist can detect oral cancer, a potentially life-threatening disease (25 percent of the 30,000 Americans who get this type of cancer will die from the disease). Dentists can also evaluate what impact your medications are having on your oral health. This is important because many medications can cause dry mouth, and saliva is an important factor when it comes to good oral health. A solution to dry mouth can be as simple as mouthwash or a spray,” she said.

Dr. Maki earned her undergraduate and D.D.S. degrees at the University of Iowa. After graduating from the University of Iowa’s dental school in 1986, she completed a residency program at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Salt Lake City in 1987. She began practicing at Pioneer Valley Dental in 1988. Throughout her career, Dr. Maki has served as a volunteer with many local charitable dental programs including Salt Lake Donated Dental.
