Planet Athlete MLK I Have A Dream Showcase

January 2012. — Planet Athlete announces that it is bringing its largest showcase of high school, Prep, and post grad basketball to Newark, New Jersey for MLK – I Have A Dream – Battle Ground Newark. This Showcase will feature an incredible lineup of the best high schools in New Jersey, and New York, as well as Prep, and Post Grad Teams from across the USA. Each year Planet Athlete strives to present and host the best National Level Showcases in the USA, and the MLK Showcase is one of the best in America.

The Planet Athlete MLK – Battle Ground Newark is set for January 14-16, 2012. The Showcase is so big that Saturday’s high school games are being held at Newark East Side High School, and the Prep, and Post Grad games at Newark West Side Rec Center. Sunday and Monday games will also be held at the Newark West Side Rec Center.

The Premier game of the Showcase and with National ranking on the line is the St. Benedict’s Prep vs. Wings Academy. St. Benedict’s Prep is ranked #10 in USA Today’s Top 25, and # 29 in ESPN’s Powerade FAB 50. St. Benedict’s Prep features 6’8 Forward Isaiah Watkins who has offers from Stanford, Villanova, Temple, Penn State, Cincinnati, and Arkansas; Miami Commit Melvin Johnson, and Canada’s #1 Point Guard, Tyler Ennis, who has offers from Arizona, Louisville, Georgia Tech, Memphis, Tennessee, Georgetown, west Virginia, and Kansas; along with 2015 basketball prodigy Isaiah Briscoe, who is setting the recruiting world on fire. Wings Academy, with a long history as a New York City PSAL Powerhouse, and current Bronx Borough Champion is Ranked # 12 in New York State, and is led by Speedy Justin Jenkins , along with 6-7 forward Steven Gomez , and 6-4 Marvilio Berroa. Add in three Rice transfers and Wings may be the best high school team in NYC.

Other key match ups include Satellite Academy of the Bronx, which has quickly become a giant killer, is up against a young Princeton Day Academy of Laurel, Maryland, a nationally recognized program that features the best freshman big man combo’s in the USA with 7’ foot Malik Kuwornu, and 6’8 William Tcheineng, who both already have offers from George Washington, Maryland, Richmond, and George Mason.

Both Cardinal McCarrick, and Newark East Side, get to test the strength of the Dominican Duo, Carlos Galan and Yohan Almonte, who together are one of the best guard combos in NYC. Samuel Gompers High School from the Bronx is currently on a tear beating Prep Schools Manhattan Sports Academy, and Redemption Christian Academy decisively over the Holiday’s. Coach Lucky of Manhattan Sports Academy says, if Carlos gets hot, he is unstoppable, as he ripped them for 36 points.

Of course Planet Athlete has a surprise for you with two outstanding Prep games between Alif Muhammad’s NIA National Team, and Trent Internationale of Houston, Texas. Coach Eugene Harris brings a “worldwide” flair to this year’s event with his Phoenix of Trent Internationale. The Phoenix have an array of overseas talent that has dominated competition in Europe, Africa and Asia. Roaming the paint for the Phoenix will be Egyptian big men- 6’9” Sr. Ali Mohamed (committed to Rice) and 6’8” Jr. Ahmed Hamdy. 6’5” Sr. Edgaras Kvedaravicius (Lithuania), 6’3” Sr. Jimmy Salem (Lebanon) and 6’4” Sr. Justin Mc Cray will lead the scoring attack from beyond the perimeter. Mc Cray is also a “Tough-as Nails” finisher in the lane off the slash and a heady defender. 6’3” Sr. Soheil Yousefi (Iran) will push the ball in transition for the Phoenix- and if he gets enough room on the break, you will witness one of the most athletic dunking point-men in the world; and Tyson Waterman’s Believe Prep out of Fort Mill, South Carolina with a reportedly 5 D1’s players is coming to Newark to face Alif Muhammad’s NIA Prep in what some describe as an all-out war!

On the Post Grad level, Irvington’s own Robinson School coached by Vince Robinson, who was voted one of the best Post Grad Coaches in America, faces its number one rival the Phelps School of Malvern, Pennsylvania on Saturday Night,, and did we say Army, as West Point Prep, which is loaded with All American Power, faces Believe Prep, Phelps School, and ABCD Prep of Dallas, Texas.

“We are absolutely thrilled to present the MLK I Have A Dream Showcase to the Newark, New Jersey Community. MLK Battleground Newark will be an all-out basketball frenzy, as there is not a bigger event on the entire east coast, and the diversity of teams and players at this event is phenomenal. We are featuring over 40 kids over 6’5, along with 3 7’ footers; and at least 50 NCAA Division 1 players will be showcased this weekend. The City of Newark, Newark Public Schools, and the UCC have truly been receptive and supportive of this event, and have opened its arms to provide us with facilities to play in said Eric Bowman, President of Planet Athlete.
