Light Emitted Diodes are semiconductor devices. Biasing the junction with direct current drives electrons and holes to congregate at the junction, creating emission of energy as photons. Materials used and biasing conditions controls output energy and frequency. Semiconductor junctions work with 2 to 3 volts direct current. A constant current source is the best power supply arrangement for trouble free working of LEDs. Plasma LED Lights are powered by 12 volts adapters for powering LEDs. Adapters can work on 110 volts or 240 volts alternating current supply.
Power supply arrangements for portable systems should be small in size with high efficiency and must be capable of adjustment to get best possible output from LEDs. Frequency output of LED should not be affected by power supply variations. Commercial power supply of the area may differ but adapter should be able to function properly. Commercial power supply is converted to 12 volts direct current by adapters to power LEDs. Number of LEDs that can be connected depends on the capacity of adapter and type of LEDs to be wired. High power LEDs need more power, while low power LEDs draws very small current. 30 mA current is normal rating of a small LED with 2 to 4 volts. Connecting leads are supplied with adaptor unit for standard adapters. Polarity of connection is very important in case of most of the LEDs. Over voltage can damage LED junctions.
Voltage and current required for LED depends on the type, color and power output. Roughly it will be between 2 to 4 volts dc. LEDs can be connected in series if the power supply is of higher voltage. Resistances are to be connected in series to correct voltage supply otherwise. Plasma LEDs have their own power supply adapters with perfect protection, voltage and current rating. They are of 12 volts rating so that they can be connected to battery of car or boat also.
Professional powers supply unit of 150 watts are available. It can deliver 12 volts 12.5 ampere output. Professional power supply unit is not provided with leads. These are to be acquired separately. Power supply unit comply with standards of the industry. Output voltage contains very low noise and ripple. Over voltage and short circuit protection is available. Electromagnetic induction is capable of reducing frequency variations. 50 to 60 high power LED units can be powered from one unit. Output can be varied using knobs provided for the purpose. While connecting conventions of phase, neutral and ground should be followed.
Light Emitting Diodes are not designed for dimming. But there are occasions where dimming the brightness of LEDs are required. Different voltage adapters are available for different brands of LEDs. Dimmers come with knobs for adjusting voltage supplies and a switch for power on and off. Dimming will not be equal for all colors. Dimmers should be selected for the particular brand of LEDs and operation voltages.
Low current operation of the LEDs reduces fire hazard and requirement for higher gauge wires and special insulations.
