As far as major holidays go, Christmas definitely lays claim to the best playlist. Whether you’re a fan of classical music or modern rock, there’s always a holiday-theme song on the radio during the months of December. (And by “always,” we mean “far too often.”) But Thanksgiving needs recognition as something other than Christmas’ lame little brother, so we thought we’d give you a list of songs to listen to in between watching the game and silently judging the quality of your relatives’ cooking.
10.) “Thank You” by Led Zeppelin

Spending the holiday with your significant other? Rather than arguing about whose parents you’ll visit that day, get in the right spirit with “Thank You” by Led Zeppelin. It’s a touching tune from arguably the best hard rock band of all time and if you ignore the fact that the love-themed lyrics seem to be in complete contradiction with the group’s hedonistic reputation, it’s a nice song to dedicate to your better half on the day when we’re supposed to be grateful for all the best gifts you’ve had in life.

9.) “Kind and Generous” by Natalie Merchant

This late 90s hit from Natalie Merchant, former lead singer of 10,000 Maniacs, is another choice if you want to show someone your appreciation on this holiday. It’s a little more general than the Led Zeppelin song, which was clearly about a lover. This one works in that respect, sure, but it could also be about a parent, friend, or anyone who you are grateful for. Plus, Merchant has one of the most soothing voices you can expect to hear. This song should definitely be included on your playlist.
8.) “Peanuts Thanksgiving Theme” by Guaraldi Trio

Charlie Brown and the gang are always a welcome part of Thanksgiving. Give them a little recognition this year with this recording of their classic Thanksgiving theme.
7.) “November” by Tom Waits

Food and family not raising your spirits this year? Well you can always rely on Tom Waits to give your angst a nice, gravelly voice. It’s not specifically a Thanksgiving song, but “November” at least has the month right.
6.) “Thanks a Lot” by Johnny Cash

Thanksgiving is an iconic American holiday and Johnny Cash is an iconic American artist. It’s not the most celebratory tune on the list, but it deserves a spot simply because Johnny Cash makes everything better.
5.) “Thank You Too” by My Morning Jacket

Yeah, it’s another song about giving thanks to a loved one, but honestly, this one deserves a mention simply because we’re grateful that a band like My Morning Jacket exists. Just when it looked like good old-fashioned guitar rock was dead, these Tennessee boys come along and put that myth to rest. Their recent success is a fantastic reason to give thanks this year.
4.) “Thank You” by Dave Brubeck

Any jazz fans at your party this year? Add this classic Dave Brubeck track to the playlist to give them something to be grateful for.

3.) “The Last Resort” by The Eagles

This track from the Hotel California album is sure to appease that cousin who is majoring in political science and can’t help but point out to all the other dinner guests that the holiday of Thanksgiving allows us to complacently deny the mistreatment brought upon the Native American population by the Pilgrims. Don Henley says he mainly wrote the song to comment on the way man inevitably destroys his environment, but there are some definite references to the conflict between the settlers who came to America and the population that was already there. It makes for a nice, socially-conscious addition to the playlist. Just don’t blame us if it generates awkward political debates between yourself and and your , ahem, more “traditional” grandparents.
2.) “The Thanksgiving Song” by Adam Sandler

Adam Sandler’s acoustic love-letter to turkey and nonsensical rhymes is a staple of the Thanksgiving season and if you somehow miss hearing it on the radio this year, be sure to add it to your playlist. It makes absolutely no sense — the jokes themselves, if they can even be called jokes, have nothing to do with the particular holiday — but it’s become an essential part of Thanksgiving ever since it was recorded, and there’s no reason to break from tradition.
1.) “Alice’s Restaurant” by Arlo Guthrie

Honestly, what other song could have possibly taken the number one spot on this list? This nearly nineteen minute long song which tells the true story of Guthrie’s conviction for littering and the bizarre effect it had on his eligibility for the draft is played almost hourly on countless radio stations across America on Thanksgiving Day, mainly because that happens to be when many of the events described in the song took place. What does it have to say about showing gratitude for one’s family, friends, and life? Well, um, nothing. But for a large portion of the population, this song is as much a part of Thanksgiving as turkey and football. It’s the essential song for the holiday.
