Indianapolis, IN, 28 February 2013: Playground injuries, as the statistics reveal, have been staggering in the US in recent years. In 2009, 220,000 children were treated in emergency departments for playground equipment related injuries. It boils down to the eye-opening figure of 18,334 per month. AAA State of Play, a leader in playground equipment, has released an infographic focused on the issue of Playground Safety for children.

The infographic recommends 6-point solution for the prevention of injuries in playgrounds:

Purchase the equipment from IPEMA certified manufacturers

Cover the playground with recycled rubber mulch

Playground installation adhering to COSC guidelines

Ensure children wear proper gear

Shade to protect children from harsh sun

Regular inspections

A top AAA State of Play executive elaborated, œThe major cause of playground equipment-related fatalities is strangulation. On the other hand, nonfatal injuries are often due to falls. Recent studies indicate the lack of will in enforcing child safety precautions as well as the presence of physical hazards, absence of age-appropriate equipment design and missing supervision of adults.

Superior quality play sets of IPEMA certified manufacturers can help prevent fatal and non-fatal injuries resulting from strangulation and falls. Designed under the guidance of experts, these play sets significantly reduce the chances of equipment related injuries. Covering of playground with recycled rubber mulch can also bring down the number of injuries related to falls. Moreover, using recycled mulches supports environment as well. Other acceptable loose-fill materials are hardwood fiber mulch, shredded rubber and fine sand. Depth and extension of surfacing must in accordance to the height of equipment.

CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) has laid out detailed guidelines on playground installation. These need to be followed in letter and spirit. It is also important to ensure that the children wear protective wear. The CPSC has issued voluntary guidelines on the children's clothing. Children are at risk when drawstrings on clothing get entangled in the play equipment. Adherence to the guidelines will prevent it.

Supervision of children can be done using visual and auditory contact. The supervisor needs to prevent unsafe behaviors like shoving, pushing, crowding and inappropriate use of equipment. It also needs to be ensured that comprehensive inspection of playgrounds is conducted by qualified specialists to pre-set maintenance schedules.
