This year marks the 40th Anniversary when the United States Congress passed the National Holiday Act of 1971 designating the last Monday in May as the official Federal Holiday that the United States celebrate Memorial Day making it a three-day weekend.

Memorial Day honors Americans who have died fighting in any war. This holiday began after the United States Civil War in the 1860's as Decoration Day to honor all those who died on both sides of the war. The American Civil War was the deadliest war in America's history with an estimated 620,000 lives lost.

World War II was the deadliest war with an estimated loss of 292,000 American battlefield casualties. 2011 marks the 70th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on December 7, 1941. In that attack an estimated 2,388 American died, including some 900 who are still entombed in the USS Arizona beneath the Pearl Harbor Memorial. The attack on Pearl Harbor brought America into World War II.

As the brave men and women still fight in ongoing wars today in Afghanistan and Iraq, we honor the young lives that have been lost in these wars as well.

This is our small way of calling attention to and honoring the service men and women who all have given the ultimate sacrifice of their own lives in the defense of our Nation and for our freedom.

In the Memorial Day Service at Pearl Harbor a wreath of Hawaiian flowers, including plumerias, is tossed on the waters to honor and remember the brave men and women who lost their lives on that fateful day.
