(Free-Press-Release.com) January 26, 2011 --
A commemorative coin to celebrate the engagement of Prince William and Kate Middleton has been launched by a Mint in greater London.
The family-run Pobjoy Mint, based in south London, came up with the idea to alter a coin they were already producing to include the couple’s initials.
The silver coin, which shows an image of Buckingham Palace with the initials WW and KM intertwined, was launched last Monday.
John Smith, Pobjoy Mint General Manager, said: “When the royal wedding announcement was made we were ready and waiting. We had been in discussions as to what we could create to commemorate the engagement. We already had the die made with Buckingham Palace on it so it was a fortunate position we were in that we were able to respond so quickly.
We have some designs that are already being presented to Clarence House for approval. We hope to have several different designs in circulation by the end of January which gives us plenty of time before the wedding in April.”
Before a new royal commemorative coin can be made it must be vetted and approved by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Clarence House and staff at Buckingham Palace.
Mr Smith, who has worked for the firm since 1992, believes the new range will prove hugely popular as the public gears up for the big day at Westminster Abbey.
“I believe this coins will rapidly become a collector's item as the ones we issued for Prince Charles and Diana’s wedding were extremely popular."
Pobjoy Mint produced its first coin in 1971 and as well as commemorative coins they are the sole supplier of currency to the Isle of Man and have also produced currency for the Seychelles and South Georgia.
The new royal coins are available in either sterling silver or cupro-nickel and can be bought from www.pobjoy.com.
