Pocket-sized gadget ‘zaps’ the brain to relieve pain and anxiety

December 8, 2010

Unusual gadget for home use that's an alternative to medication for chronic pain sufferers and people with anxiety, insomnia and high stress.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) December 8, 2010 -- Is it safe to ‘zap’ people with electrical impulses to relieve pain and anxiety? The answer is yes, if the current is low enough.

Conjuring images of Electric shock treatment and Frankensteins monster, people are at first sceptical that such a treatment can work ... and that it is safe. But this form of ‘Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation’ has been used overseas by 12 million people with virtually no side effects in 30 years.

Alpha-Stim is an i-pod sized medical device that attaches to the earlobes sending tiny pulses of electrical stimulation to the brain. The current and waveform are specifically designed to trigger ‘feel good’ chemicals such as endorphins and serotonin and change electrical patterns to the ‘Alpha’ waves having a calming effect.

Sydney Alpha-Stim distributor Emily Macgregor says ‘I get feedback from people getting relief from all sorts of conditions, from panic attacks, depression and fibromyalgia to kids with ADHD and Asperger’s. Alpha-Stim works quickly with children and parents are very grateful for an effective alternative to medications’

Australian user Victoria Presser finds the device very helpful for her Fibromyalgia, saying it not only reduces the pain, but makes her feel ‘happier’.

Alpha-Stim is listed with the TGA for anxiety, insomnia, stress and pain - so why is it not readily available as an alternative to anti-anxiety medications, sleeping pills and pain medications here in Australia?

“Money.” says Dr Daniel Kirsch, the American inventor. Kirsch explains he doesn’t have the capacity of huge pharmaceuticals to market this product to doctors everywhere, even though there are more research papers on Alpha-Stim than any therapeutic device in the world.

In the US a doctor’s prescription is required in order to take home a device for personal use but Australians can order the device online.

Alpha-Stim can be worn whilst doing other activities like working on the computer, watching TV and is generally used between 20 – 60 minutes daily depending on the condition.

Emily explains ‘I do occasionally have a device returned. In the 126 clinical trials that have been done on Alpha-Stim, around 90% of people have significant improvement so there is a percentage of people that it doesn’t work for.’
