Video is becoming the most important media to get your company's product or service message noticed online, and get your company's web site ranked higher in the organic results on the major search engines. A recent study stated that video now accounts for over 50% of the Internet traffic!
Visual IMPACT! principal, Mark Besh, talks with Sandra Maurer on her "Maurer Marketing Minutes" radio show about some of the following benefits of using video online, and a few of the following list of tips that will aid in better success.
Mark Besh expanded on some of the following benefits:
• Video generates more traffic to your site, and control over your monetization
• Video has better measurement capabilities, and can strengthen overall website SEO
• Video is the best at creating brand recognition, and "authority" rankings—especially if it goes "viral"
• Video shows up multiple times in search results
• Video is the quickest way to get organically listed
Mark also gave some details on a few of the following tips:
• Use an "embedded" player (not a 'pop-up')
• Use a descriptive "thumbnail" picture
• Use only one video per distinct page (landing page or unique URL's)
• Provide related on-page text/ tags/ captions/ comments, etc.)
• Allow viewers to download, embed, and share your videos
• Enable commenting and rating
• Allow users to subscribe via RSS and MRSS (RSS with Media enclosures)
• Include social bookmarking tools
• Leverage "closed captions" for indexing, placement, accessibility, and global reach
• Use video sharing sites like YouTube, blip.TV, Metacafe, Yahoo! Video, AOL Video, MSN Lice Search, Clipblast!, VideoCrawler, and Revver (especially if content has viral appeal)—and TubeMogul to upload to multiple sites
• Consider "aggregators" (video-only search engines) like blinkx, Truveo, VideoSurf, and Veoh
• Add URL to the start of your description
• Set the video player to "autoplay" so it is shown right away (consider lowering the volume setting to 20-30%)
• Add measurable "calls to action" (coupons/ promos codes., etc.)
• Mention 'related' videos/content to your video
• Should be 45 seconds to 1 minute long (but, tell the story first, so if it's interesting, it can be up to 3-5 minutes)
• Be sure it will play on all devices (TV, computer, iPods, phones, etc.)—you can offer multiple formats (FLV; MOV; MPEG; MP4, WMV, AVI, etc.)
• Encode your video with good metadata that includes your keywords
• Be sure you have 'normal' and generally used keywords associated with the video—so the most people you are targeting can find it (Use "Longtail" searches since they are easier to rank for organics, and are cheaper to buy for PPC—and typically result in higher conversion percentage)
Mark also cites some of the specific details for YouTube "success"—equaling Quality + Value + Community—and that in the future, search engines will be able to 'understand' the actual video "content" with image, speech and facial recognition technologies, so they will not need to be 'told' what the video is saying with related text, meta data, and tags.
