Polypropylene more attractive for automotive applications

(Free-Press-Release.com) May 29, 2011 -- Polypropylene is finding ever more uses in automotive applications and is set to play a strong role in the auto industry moving forward, Gerd Lobbert, board member at Borealis,CAS 12018-10-9 , told participants at the European Plastic Converters conference Thursday.

Lobbert said that, back in the 1980s, automobile manufacturers preferred to use more expensive high performance plastics in their designs. However, as cost pressures started to change the industry,Copper Chromite（CC） wholesalers , the more commoditized and therefore less expensive polypropylene became a more attractive polymer for auto manufacturers.

There is a lot more that can be done, Lobbert said.

In particular, he said Borealis sees big opportunities in fast growing economies such as India and China.

Polypropylene is the king of the plastics in terms of transport and cars. It is the lowest cost engineering plastic that replaces steel and other plastics in the interior, exterior and under the hood of a car, said Hugues Haubruge, the marketing manager of olefins for Total Petrochemicals, in a speech Thursday.

However, Lobbert said that in developed countries auto manufacturers were sometimes hesitant to try new methods and technology.
