HONOLULU, HI (December 9, 2010) – Locking a small infant or young child in an automobile is any parent’s worst nightmare. This unfortunate scenario just happened to local mother Michelle Silva Pavao. However, she remembered learning about Pop-A-Lock® of Honolulu’s Emergency Door Unlocking (EDU) Program on television and was able to rescue her child within ten minutes. Under the EDU Program, Pop-A-Lock® of Honolulu will immediately respond to a call in which a child is locked in an automobile free of charge.
Aimed to support local police and firefighters, the program raises awareness for residents to first call 9-1-1 and then call Pop-A-Lock®. Pop-A-Lock® technicians nearest to the scene will leave all other priorities aside to arrive as soon as possible to unlock the child from the automobile. In most cases, Pop-A-Lock® will be on site within minutes of receiving the phone call from a parent, guardian or bystander. There are many related dangers of leaving children unattended in and around cars, and this successful community service program continues to prevent and educate parents about these accidental mishaps. In fact, since the program’s launch, over 250,000 children have been saved from locked cars by Pop-A-Lock® trained professionals nationwide.
“There is nothing more important than rescuing a child from a locked car,” said Jack Walker, co-owner of Pop-A-Lock® of Honolulu. “When I received the phone call from Ms. Silva Pavao, I was the closest to the scene. I was able to reach her and safely remove her child from the car within minutes. What many people do not realize, is that the temperature inside a locked car can change dramatically within a very short amount of time. So, one must respond just as quickly as if it were any other type of emergency.” Additionally, Pop-A-Lock® provides free emergency door unlocking services for handicapped, elderly and pets.
“It happened in a split-second. I was buckling my baby into the car seat and forgot I placed my keys on the front seat. By habit, I locked the door and reached to open the driver-side [door]. It was then that I realized what happened,” explained Michelle Silva Pavao. “I remembered seeing a commercial on television about Pop-A-Lock® of Honolulu and immediately called them. Within minutes, they had arrived and safely removed my baby from the car. They were extremely calm and professional.”
“Pop-A-Lock® of Honolulu began providing service locally in July of 2009,” added Cathy Walker, co-owner of Pop-A-Lock® Honolulu. “Since then, we have rescued eight children. So, we know the program is working and thanks to our co-sponsor KHON TV Channel 2, the message is getting communicated effectively.” For more information about Pop-A-Lock’s Emergency Door Unlock (EDU) Program, please visit: http://www.popalock.com
