Positive Role Models, Promoting Peace and Understanding: International Men's Day
A slow start and small audience at the observance in 1999 would have been an ominous sign that this effort would be stillborn. Fortunately, the spark was kept burning and there was a rapid spread of IMD during 2008 to 2010. Today, IMD is observed by indiv

International Men's Day (IMD) has transcended language barriers, geographic boundaries, political ideology and religious differences. Furthermore, these observances are not restricted to any particular class, gender, age and occupation.
Observers of IMD try to convince non-believers of equality and peace. Those who shun peace are encouraged to adopt a new way of thinking and interacting with others. Comments and criticisms from the public have allowed the promoters and supporters of IMD to improve their efforts, reconsider strategies and reassess goals. Feminists should not feel threatened by International Men’s Day. Some of their goals are similar to the six pillars of International Men’s Day which include promoting gender equality.
The focus of IMD is on men, women, teenagers and children. The observance of this Day will help reduce the polarization between the men’s movement and the women’s movement. Yes, International Men’s Day highlights the common bonds of humanity. Those persons supporting International Men’s Day seek to restore the dignity and respect of members of the human family. The supporters, coordinators and participants have been trying to offer different perspectives and new ideas for the leader and layperson. The movement has embraced all persons and is not interested in continuing problems and promoting divisions.
There are persons across the globe who volunteered their time and energy to promote IMD. Their concerns are genuine and the common bond uniting these co-ordinators of IMD is their belief in individuals deciding to change their lives. The fuel of IMD comprises the dedicated and humble persons who have volunteered their time and willingly sought to create a better world. The majority of these amazing persons have full-time jobs whilst others are either part-time workers or unemployed. They have neither signed contracts nor made promises to serve for a limited or fixed time. Their genuine desire to assist is sufficient criteria. The mission of these co-ordinators has rescued numerous individuals from the depths of destruction and despair.
The supporters, promoters and organizers of IMD observances do not seek fame and glory but believe in a dream of equality, peace and cooperation. These persons patiently attempt to remove the negative images and the stigma associated with men in our society. Their successes are obvious from the fact that each year there has been an increase in observances. Men’s organisations, anti-war groups, peace organizations, women’s groups, gender departments at universities, politicians and individuals from all walks of life have annually celebrated International Men’s Day.
This phase of International Men’s Day is unique in that some of its greatest promoters and supporters are women. These outstanding women such as Diane Sears of the USA, Marie Clarence of Hungary and Uma Challa of India have realized the positive benefits IMD will have on our families, neighborhoods, nations and the world. Other women around the world, who support IMD, are visionaries and have been a tremendous asset to the men’s movement. International Men’s Day promotes constructive dialogue between both sexes for greater understanding and tolerance.
