Power Plant Maintenance Saving South Africa Money.

South Africa has the second most affordable electricity in the world behind Canada.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) January 25, 2012 -- South Africa has the second most affordable electricity in the world behind Canada. For many years we have taken our electricity supply for granted, however, that time has passed. Eskom has neglected their power plant maintenance policy which has led to power cuts all over South Africa. Over consumption also puts strain on the electricity grid. Neglected infrastructure combine with over consumption intensifies the South African energy crisis.

Electricity shortages in South Africa have caused the country to lose money which is choking the growth of our economy. Mines rely heavily on electricity for workers to go underground and when power outages halt mining operations the country loses billions. The South African economy is based on the mining of gold and diamonds, so you can imagine the extent of damage even one day of lost productivity causes. Other businesses are affected somehow, with small businesses particularly bearing the brunt of the power shortages. Some examples are restaurants that lose money because they cannot prepare food. Power shortages also affect cleanliness of water because water purification systems cannot do its job. When Traffic lights are down due to electricity outages, South Africa is negatively affected because people get to work late which decreases productivity at work. When there are power shortages hospital patients are affected because machinery no longer works and many can die.

Ways to help preserve energy:

Be prepared - Buying a backup generator can help save and make you money. While generators are not very cheap they will keep businesses operating. Many people are investing in generators for their homes because load shedding is a real inconvenience.

Reduce energy consumption - Eskom and government cannot fix the power crisis alone. Because load shedding affects all of us, we need to do our part. We use electricity wastefully and that needs to stop. If electrical appliances and lights are not in use they should be turned off, especially items that consume lots of electricity such as a geyser.

In conclusion Eskom needs to improve its power plant maintenance system, which includes transformer testing and transformer services. The infrastructure that we use is out-dated so Eskom are upgrading the infrastructure which will improve the electricity crisis in South Africa.
