'Trade winds to Meluhha' is set in the Bronze Age and it narrates a young man SAMASIN's adventure in Mesopotamia and Indus Valley Civilization. He is charged with murder and through sheer luck, escapes death. A dying man has asked him to meet one SIWA SAQRA. His search takes him to Meluhha where besides the query he also finds wealth and love.
In writing this novel over the past three years, Vasant Davé has referred to books and websites, visited archaeological sites and museums and discussed with experts on the subject. With a wide geographical spread of the plot from the present day Iraq to India, ultimately what is the story?
In the year 2138 BC, Samasin worked as a stable boy with a wealthy Babylonian named NERGAL and one day was falsely implicated in the murder of a visiting Meluhhan businessman. Tipped off by Nergal's divorced wife ELATI, he fled to the distant land of Meluhha in search of Siwa Saqra whose name the dying man had uttered. During the voyage, he met the beautiful VELLI with whom he fell in love but was dismayed to find that that she was still devoted to someone who had jilted her. He also met ANU, a Mesopotamian woman who concealed her identity because she was searching for a couple of faceless men for revenge.
On the way, Samasin learnt about the ten glyphs of Dholavira and with the help of Anu deciphered them, leading to an adventure in the ravines of the Saraswathi. He faced a series of obstacles including a few which almost killed him. Finally when he met Siwa Saqra, he was surprised to learn that there was more to the murder in Babylon than met the eye.
Circumstances brought all characters together in Babylon when with awe they discovered the truth about the trade between Meluhha and Mesopotamia, and the identity of the brain behind the diabolic operations. A trial before Babylon's Council of Elders ended in a disaster. That was when Anu spoke up and shocked everybody, but more so Samasin. After a hot pursuit beyond the Lower Sea, the culprit was brought to book and sentenced to death. The three women wronged by him rallied to exhibit rare compassion.
Previous novels based on Indus Valley Civilization were 'Winter on the Plain of Ghosts' by Eileen Kernaghan and 'Immortals of Meluha' by Amish Tripathi. The first revolved around the occult wherein the Meluhhans sacrificed children of other races. The later drew heavily from Hindu mythology wherein Lord Shiva descended from his abode in the Himalayas to save the Meluhhans. In stark contrast, 'Trade winds to Meluhha' is firmly founded on archaeological evidence except at a few places where the injection of suspense was considered necessary.
Vasant Davé's free e-booklet 'How I wrote a Pre-Historic Novel' could be downloaded from http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/75096 . 'Trade winds to Meluhha' is scheduled to be released as eBook on Amazon by December, 2011.
