ROOLDINE LINDOR, A 2O-YEAR-OLD HAITIAN UNIVERSITY STUDENT,
WAS BRUTALLY RAPED AND URDERED IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC ON JULY 12, 2011
"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single
garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly” (Dr. Martin Luther King)
On Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at 4:30 pm, Banm Dwam International will conduct a press conference in
front of 271 Madison Ave, New York, N.Y. in order to bring to light more information about this case
and the fight that we are facing as we seek to promote and defend the human rights and interests of
all Haitians everywhere. For far too long, Haitian immigrants in the Dominican Republic have been
subjected to all types of sufferings. Human rights violations against our brothers and sisters in the
Dominican Republic have been rampant. They have been deprived of basic migrant rights; and they
have been victims of repeated acts of extreme violence. To add insult to injuries, the perpetrators of
those crimes have been released with a slap on the wrist because Haitians have been seen and treated
as second class citizens or even sub-humans. On Tuesday, July 12, 2011, Rooldine Lindor, a 20 year
old Haitian student in Computer Engineering at the Technological University of Santiago (UTESA)
was raped and brutally murdered by her potential landlord after he robbed her of 18,000 pesos (U.S.
$500). This barbaric act has denied the right to life to Rooldine, and has dispossessed a family of its
only daughter. Ban Mwen Dwam International, together with the Lindor family, intends to bring
international attention to this tragedy. Ban Mwen Dwam International wants to send a strong message
that violence against Haitians in the Dominican Republic is not acceptable; because violence against
human beings, no matter what their race, gender, or national origin is never acceptable, wherever it
occurs.
