(Free-Press-Release.com) August 15, 2011 -- [What is Hay Fever?]
Seasonal allergic rhinitis, also known as[Hay fever], is an allergic inflammation of the nasal airways. It occurs when an allergen, such as pollen or dust, is inhaled by an individual with a sensitized immune system. In such individuals, the allergen triggers the production of the antibody immunoglobulin E (IgE), which binds to mast cells and basophils containing histamine.

According to John Collard, clinical director of Allergy UK, hay fever is an allergy caused when your body makes antibodies in response to certain triggers, such as pollen. It's most common in children and particularly, teenagers, but you can also develop hay fever at any age.

[Hay fever facts and Possible Periods of Allergy]

Hay fever affects about 2 in 10 people in the UK and around (10-25 %) in western countries in Europe. Grass pollen is the most common cause and tends to affect people every year in the grass pollen season from about May to July (late spring to early summer). However, the term is often used when allergies are caused by other pollens such as tree pollens. Tree pollens tend to affect people from March to May (early to late spring) each year. Other individuals may be allergic to weed pollens (including nettles and docks) as weeds tend to pollinate from early spring to early autumn.

[What causes Hay fever?]
Hay fever is caused by breathing in pollen particles and by pollen getting into the eyes. In the UK, you can get hay fever at any time from early spring to late summer, depending on which pollen or pollens you're allergic to. Often an inborn condition, the most common causes of hay fever are:
• Tree pollen (Spring Hay fever)
• Grass pollen (Summer Hay fever)
• Mugwort and hybrids such as Chrysanthemums (Autumn Hay fever)
• House dust mites and mould fungus - particularly associated with perennial allergic rhinitis.

[Symptoms of Hay Fever?]
The symptoms of hay fever can vary from person to person. Some people only have mild symptoms that tend to come and go whilst others can be severely affected with symptoms that are present every day during the pollen season. Common hay fever symptoms include the following:
• Itchy and watery eyes
• Frequent sneezing and a bunged up or runny nose
• Itching on the roof of the mouth
• Coughing
• Wheezing or a burning sensation in the throat

[Prevention is better than Cure?]

It is very difficult to completely avoid pollen or spores. However, reducing your exposure to the substances that trigger your hay fever should ease the severity of your symptoms. Follow the advice below to avoid being exposed to excessive amounts of pollen and spores (http://www.allcures.com/Health-Info/Conditions/Hayfever.htm).
• Avoid cutting grass, playing or walking in grassy areas, and camping.
• Wear wraparound sunglasses to stop pollen getting in your eyes when you are outdoors.
• Change your clothes and take a shower to wash hair as well as body after being outdoors to remove the pollen on your body.
• Try as much as possible stay indoors when the pollen count is very high (over 50).
• Keep windows and doors shut in the house. In case is gets too warm, draw the curtains to keep out the sun and keep the temperature down.
• Do not keep fresh flowers in the house.

• Vacuum regularly, ideally using a machine with a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter.
• Damp dust regularly. Try dusting with a wet cloth, rather than a dry one, to collect the dust and stop any pollen from being spread around.
• Keep pets out of the house during the hay fever season. If your pet does come indoors, wash it regularly to remove any pollen from its fur.
• Do not smoke or let other people smoke in your house. Smoking and breathing in other people's smoke will irritate the lining of your nose; eyes, throat and airways, and can make your symptoms worse.

[What are the commonly used treatments?]

The commonly used treatment options for hay fever are antihistamine nasal sprays, antihistamine tablets, steroid nasal sprays and eye drops. If your hay fever symptoms are not controlled on the medication that you are taking after 2-4 weeks, you should discuss this with your doctor or GP. You may need to try a different treatment or add in another treatment.

If you are taking hay fever medication regularly and your hay fever is well controlled on your current treatment, you should continue this treatment until the end of the pollen season.
