FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Spokane, Washington, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) September 14, 2011 -- Many TMJ related symptoms are caused by poor posture, stress, trauma or a combination of these factors. This irritates structures in the jaw and face including the Temporomandibular joint (TMJ), the muscles that open and close the mouth and the cervical spine.

There is a strong correlation with dysfunction in the upper cervical complex and TMJ problem. This is due to their anatomy as many of the muscles are associated and tend to influence both areas. The normal biomechanics get altered which lead to compensations resulting in joints and muscles not working as well as they should. Over time this will result not only in pain but degeneration of the joint (arthritis) and altered muscle patterns.

"It's not only the grinding or clenching the teeth that can cause problems in the TMJ," says Dr. Shirley of Spinal and Sports Care Clinic located in the Spokane Valley. "Many of our patients already have mouth guards by the time we see them, which generally only help a little."

"As patients go through their treatment plan, we teach them how to better manage their condition as they go through their daily routine. Being able to keep symptoms to a minimum and reinforcing activities that aid in healing not only help the patient recover faster but also improve long term results."
