Professional Organizer Cheryl Osterhouse to Appear on A&E’s Hoarders

Professional Organizer, Cheryl Osterhouse, of In Order for Life, LLC, will appear in an upcoming episode of A&E’s popular TV series, HOARDERS. Osterhouse worked behind the scenes in the upcoming episode filmed in Westminster on August 23rd and 24th, with the professional team of Matt Paxton and Dr. Melva Green as they document the struggle of a Maryland woman working to overcome her battle with hoarding.

Osterhouse was invited to help assist in a crisis de-cluttering of a Maryland resident’s home. Along with local medical help, Osterhouse, will lend her expertise as she works with the HOARDERS aftercare team to help the client learn new organizing skills and habits.

According to the Mayo Clinic, Hoarding is defined as “The excessive collection of items, along with the inability to discard them. Hoarding often creates such cramped living conditions that homes may be filled to capacity, with only narrow pathways winding through stacks of clutter. Some people also collect animals, keeping dozens or hundreds of pets often in unsanitary conditions. People who hoard often don't see it as a problem, making treatment challenging. But intensive treatment can help people who hoard understand their compulsions and live safer, more enjoyable lives.”

Matt Paxton, is a frequent expert authority on “Hoarders”, author of The Secret Lives of Hoarders, and the owner of Clutter Cleaners, based in Richmond, VA. “I loved working with Cheryl from In Order for Life. Although hoarding is a complex problem, according to the Institute for Challenging Disorganization, “Teaching organizational skills can help to compensate for processing deficits that contribute to hoarding.” Research cited by Dr. Catherine Ayers at UC San Diego, (ocfoundation.org/hoarding) indicates that older adults in particular may actually respond better to being taught specific, concrete, organizing skills.
