Professor Maurice Mars of South Africa joins US Tele-Medicine Board of Advisors

Beverly Hills, California, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) August 31, 2011 -- (Beverly Hills) – Professor Maurice Mars, MD, Chief of the Department of Telehealth at the Nelson Mandela School of Medicine at the University of KwaZulu Natal, Durban, South Africa, has joined the Board of Advisors of US Tele-Medicine.

“Professor Mars is a true pioneer and explorer of telehealth initiatives in Africa,” said Jacques von Speyer, Chairman of US Tele-Medicine. “He founded the Department of Telehealth at KwaZulu Natal in 2002, at a time when telehealth, especially in Africa, was simply a dream.”

Professor Mars developed the first postgraduate educational program for Telemedicine and Informatics in South Africa. He chairs the South African telehealth initiatives and faces the daily challenges of both connectivity in rural South Africa and application of the telehealth models within local and tribal health efforts.

Professor Mars previously served as Chief of Physiology at the Nelson Mandela School of Medicine in Durban, South Africa.
He currently sits on the Joint WHO Global Observatory for E Health and Chairs the Education Group of ISfTeH. Professor Mars received his MBChB (MD) at Cape Town University School of Medicine in 1977.

“We look forward to working with Maurice Mars on developing exacting telemedicine protocols which relate to indigenous health issues in Africa and install current and future telemedicine technologies. His challenges are certainly great, however not insurmountable for someone of Professor Mars’ authority and steadfastness of purpose,” said von Speyer.
