FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) November 21, 2011 --Probably the biggest single item that is changing the face of the parcel delivery system is the very sophisticated scheduling and routing programmes that are becoming part of the world’s parcel delivery structure. In order to get the sophisticated and very efficient systems that are required to get a parcel to its destination on time and within budget a great deal of development and research is required.
A company like Worldwide Parcel Services can only remain at the top of the pile of high efficiency and low cost distributors by using such systems themselves and by also commissioning as their partners companies who are at the forefront of technical development. One of the major development strategies is the planning of routes for the delivery units so that they do the least amount of miles in the shortest time. This is an obvious premise but there are a number of caveats that temper the development, firstly shortest may not be quickest as it may go through traffic black spots and road works. It may also be along speed limited roads as well.
These systems are often separate for the different parts of the journey, the first being the bulk delivery services from one distribution hub to another, say from the north of England to the south or Scotland to Wales or London. This requires putting the parcel delivery on the correct transport for the most efficient delivery system at the other end. Some parcels may go through more than one hub. The quickest way between hubs may be simple but they can change in time with road changes or traffic density.
The second system is the local delivery systems where often single parcels are being delivered with sometimes a good distance between deliveries. There are a number of good software companies all vying for this business with GPS systems that are very sophisticated in their design and application. These systems will take an import list of delivery addresses and work out a route which will be the most efficient and quickest delivery pattern. It will tell the driver the position of the next delivery and will guide him there. The systems can be made to interface with the parcel sorting so that they are either put into the transport in order or given a parcel location in the van so that the driver can go straight to the parcel without delay. The whole thing can also be linked to a tracking system, allowing customers and the company to always be aware of the parcel's current location.
