Programs After School has opened enrollment for their first summer camp for 5 to 8 year olds.
“SMArty Camp” is offered for one week, four weeks and six weeks starting on June 20, 2011.
“We really priced this camp competitively and that said, we stand by our commitment to provide premium instruction and studio-quality art materials” says Programs After School President Richard Borland.
“There will always be many choices for summer camps but there only a few really good art camps. Many of our competitors are on a tangent with their ‘art’ camps; focusing on everything but art. Naturally the parents and the kids become confused by the abstract choices. Our point of difference is our philosophy and our clarity.
When we package our camp as a ‘SMArty Camp’ that is, science, math, art and yoga, we really focus on art at the center with science, math and yoga as wonderfully complimentary activities. This is totally in line with our core focus on the visual arts and how it propels creative thinking in all disciplines. Above all other factors, a summer camp has got to be fun and stimulating with no room for boredom” says Borland.
The enrollment options are extremely flexible for families. Apart from 1 week, 4 weeks or 6 weeks, there are also mornings only, afternoons only, full days, 3 days per week and five days per week. A start time of 10 AM provides kids with a chance to get to the camp well-rested and ready to have fun.
The “Junior” art classes in their studio are for 45 minutes due to the attention span for that age group however, a summer camp gives the kids a lot more opportunity to stay in their “zone”. Of course the yoga helps the kids (and the teachers) get relaxed and ready to get really creative.
As this young company continues in their growth phase, they are attracting a lot of local, talented, laid-off or under-employed teachers. “Expansion into community centers and schools is a natural progression for us, especially when out-of-state franchises are struggling to make a profit in this economy. It’s not that we are second choice for enrichment programs, it’s that we really do an excellent job in the classroom and our repeat business is over 70%. I think that our screening and quality control is outstanding, thanks to our VP of Education, Andrea Diamond. We are growing based on referrals and as the more expensive, less stimulating enrichment programs are phased out, we are being approached, unsolicited, to sit at the table” says Borland.
“We are working very hard to ensure that our classes have fresh content every session, that our teachers are professional, sharp and engaging and that we stay affordable.”
According to Richard Borland and Andrea Diamond, the most satisfying and rewarding part of running this business is without a doubt the look of joy and accomplishment on the faces of their students who are obviously having so much fun.
SMArty Camp will surely be a lot of fun for kids who really love art and also enjoy science, math and yoga.
