PUBLIC INTEREST DESIGN INSTITUTE
To be held on January 13-14, 2012 at Yale University.
New Clients + New Fee Sources = Public Interest Design
Yale University School of Architecture is presenting an emerging field of public service in architecture. The two-day course will provide knowledge and training on best practices of how design can address the critical issues faced by communities. Unlike volunteer or academic programs this new field provides fee paying jobs to architects who have faced a deep recession. Five national experts will present examples from around the world. The research is funded by the American Institute of Architects 2011 Latrobe Award.
The field of architecture is quickly growing past the success of the green design movement. Public Interest Design is an emerging practice that addresses the social, economic and environmental issues that communities face today.
The Public Interest Design Institute Series will present best practices formed around the Social Economic Environmental Design (SEED) evaluation, a set of standards that takes a holistic, creative approach to design driven by community needs. Like LEED has done, the SEED process provides a step-by-step aid for those who want to undertake and better accomplish design in the public's interest. Attendees will gain the training and expertise needed to be at the forefront of this emerging field.
