Put it Down: Part 2 An anti gun & knife crime awareness day for Croydon

-- PR Angel.com news advisory -- Gun crime in the UK has been on the rise amongst Britains Youth and a number of organisations exist to try and reverse the trend.

(Free-Press-Release.com) August 4, 2009 -- Housing Associations in Croydon and Youth Agencies are staging an anti gun & knife crime awareness event for the young people of Croydon.

The aim of the event is to:

Raise awareness amongst young people on the dangers of gun and knife crime and gang involvement and reduce the risk of young people entering into anti-social criminal or other detrimental activity by providing a range of positive activities.

To provide an opportunity for young people to express themselves on gun and knife-related issues affecting them and promote routes to education, training opportunities and employment.

To encourage communities to unite and make a stand against the violence on the streets:

To create a platform for future partnership working and best practice and raise profile of partnerships involved.

The event is free and aimed at young people aged between 11- 19. They will have the opportunity to join in workshops, seminars, question and answer session, watch a screening of anti gun film Hip Hop Opera and listen to live performances centred around the issue of Gun & Knife crime.

The programme of events on the day will include:


* Workshops conducted by Foundation 4 Life on various topics and issues which will be interactive, engaging and motivational
* Screening of Don’t Trigger Film: Hip Hop Opera: A film that hi-lights the tragic consequences of gun crime on our streets narrated by local Croydon Youth
* Question & Answer Session: An opportunity for young people to have their say and put their questions to Key Croydon People: Police, Council, MPs, ex-gang members, parents who have lost children to gun and knife crime.

* Speeches from local parents who have lost children to gun & knife crime
* Live performances from UK recording artist & MOBO winner Chipmunk alongside unsigned local talent acts JKadet, Dominic Norman, Dvyne and Kandice Johnson



The event is free and open to all young people between the ages of 11 and 19 in the community', and will finish at 5.30pm. Free refreshments will be provided.

Kevin Jones, the Neighbourhood Services Director L&Q said, 'The success of the Put It Down event last year demonstrated that gun and knife crime is a very real concern for young people . We have an important role to play here and I'm delighted that we're supporting Put It Down 2. '
