Also there is a theory stipulating that the shape has come from scallop shells. Evolved from the Mazers of medieval ages, some historians are of the opinion that Quaich is a vessel. But, because of the difference in the shapes of mazers and quaichs, this theory has been rejected later.
Earlier days, this art form known as treen was used wherein the quaichs were made out of wood. With dark and light staves some of the early quaichs are stave-built. By the bands of silver or willow, these staves are held together. Using wood piece, some of them are directly carved out. Normally opposite to each other, these types of vessels have two handles. In the highlands of Scotland, the origin of Quaich is believed and it has come to places like Glasgow by the end of the 17th century. The silver vessels became more popular by that time, and silver is used in most of the quaichs made during that period. As a gift item, these silver Quaich earned popularity and they were not only given as gift on occasion but also as prize for winning competitions. It is an important traditional aspect.
