The accident was reported around 10 this morning at the intersection of Washington and Chubbuck Street in Quincy. The victim, Robert DeCristofaro, 58, of Braintree, was working on a traffic light at the time of the crash, authorities said.
Quincy police and the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office confirmed that DeCristofaro was a city employee, but was working out of a rented “bucket truck.”
He was transported to Boston Medical Center where he was pronounced dead soon after.
“Who hit whom where is being determined,” said Quincy Police Lt. Jack Sullivan, adding that an investigation is under way between local and state police. It was unclear whether the worker was accompanied by another city employee or with a local police detail.
The incident is causing a major backup along Route 3A. Sullivan recommended commuters “use Route 53 or Route 3 to get north or southbound as the whole area is tied up” and “traffic is going to be a mess.”
“This is a terrible day for the city of Quincy and for his family,” District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey said. “The chief of our motor vehicle homicide unit is on the scene, and we are working closely with the Quincy Police Department and investigators from the Massachusetts State Police.”
“It is an active and ongoing investigation,” Morrissey added. The operator of the tractor trailer stopped his vehicle at the scene of the impact and remained in place.
OSHA has been called to the scene and no charges have been filed.
