A Robert Mundheim Professor of Law at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, Professor Wax holds a Bachelors of Science Degree from Yale University, a Masters Degree from Harvard University, and a Juris Doctorate from Columbia University. Formerly, Ms. Wax trained as a neurologist at New York Hospital in the early 1980s and served as a law clerk to Judge Abner J. Mikva on the District of Columbia Circuit Court of Appeals. From 1988 to 1994 she was an attorney in the Office of the Solicitor General at the Department of Justice and argued fifteen cases before the United States Supreme Court. She also taught at the University of Virginia Law School before teaching at the University of Pennsylvania in 2001. Her areas of teaching and researching include civil procedure, remedies, employment law, social welfare law & policy and the law and economics of work and family.
A prolific writer and author, Professor Wax has written a host of articles on social welfare issues for the Wall Street Journal, and is a member of the MacArthur Foundation working group on law & neuroscience. Other publications include "Rethinking Welfare Rights: Reciprocity Norms, Reactive Attitudes and the Political Economy of Welfare Reform", 63 Law & Contemporary Problems 257 (Winter/Spring 2000); "Something for Nothing: Liberal Justice and Welfare Work Requirements", 53 Emory Law Journal (2003); "The Political Psychology of Redistribution: Implications for Welfare Reform", The Politics of Welfare Reform (Sage Foundation Press 2005); "The Conservative’s Dilemma: Traditional Institutions, Social Change, and Same-Sex Marriage", 42 San Diego L. Rev. (Summer 2005); and, "Engines of Inequality: Class, Race, and Family Structure", 41 Family Law Quarterly (Fall 2007) to name a few.
