San Diego, California: Rady Children’s Hospital of San Diego, California has a new addition to their permanent fine art collection. “Day Dreamer” a bronze sculpture by San Diego artist Maidy Morhous has been placed to gaze at Carley’s Garden. Carley’s Magical Garden was named after Carley Copley, who was just a toddler when her battle with leukemia ended; Carley’s Magical Gardens provide a whimsical place of respite for children and adults.
“One does not have to be an art enthusiast to be touched or emotionally moved by art; art is for everyone,” said the artist. A New York native living and creating in San Diego, Morhous has received both national and international acclaim for her sculptures. Rady’s Children’s Hospital chose “Day Dreamer”, a young girl lying on her stomach feet in the air, head in hands day dreaming, because of the emotional connection they felt the children and families would feel upon viewing the piece. Flora Hoang, of Rady Children’s Hospital Foundation, helped place the piece within the large hospital facility, noting that the best location was looking out upon the magical garden.
Morhous expressed her passion for the arts and desire to give back to the community through her art. “I am inspired by the depth and breadth of bronze sculpting. The soft malleable aspect of clay allows my work to develop naturally while the strength and power of the metal evoke sensuality, passion. I begin with an idea, an emotion, an abstract concept, or a photograph from travels. As the piece develops, my original concept evolves, solidifies, or in some cases, changes completely. I see my figures as relating collectively rather than as individuals. They are celebrations of the flowing sensuous curves of the human form. They are the embodiment of feelings and emotions. In this way, they are meant to be symbolic rather than representative. “
“Art presented in a surrounding such as Rady Children’s Hospital allows the patient and family not only to enjoy the work, but redefines the hospital setting. Rady Children’s Hospital exemplifies concern for their community while serving local needs. My art is for the public to enjoy, not only the art patron who singularly enjoys the piece, but the whole community. Another bronze sculpture of the artist can be viewed in the lobby of Scripps Clinic – Carmel Valley. Maidy just completed a series of sculptures for the people of Sendai, Japan who experienced the horrific Tsunami after the 9.0 earthquake that shook Japan last March. Placement of the pieces is expected in 2012.
