The automaker's home facility in Japan, Mazda Motor Corporation in Hiroshima, in partnership with Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd. and Aisin Takaoka Co., Ltd., recently announced that it was able to successfully develop vehicle components out of 1,800 MPa (over 260,000 psi) ultra-high tensile steel.

With this achievement, Mazda has become the first ever auto manufacturer to use this type of material in the commercial vehicle production process. The super strong but very light steel will be integrated into the chassis of the 2012 Mazda CX-5 Crossover SUV that will be launched in global markets next year.

Under Mazda's SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY program, Mazda's engineers are implementing the production of new front and rear bumper beams for the 2012 CX-5 vehicle. With 1,800 MPa ultra-high tensile steel as inner reinforcement, the CX-5's bumpers can employ improved damage mitigation. The company's own tests have shown a 20% increase in strength. These new bumper beams also help the CX-5 chassis shave off around 4.8 kilograms of weight.

Because a 1,800 MPa ultra high tensile steel beam is relatively stronger than the bumper beams previously used, they can be made thinner and still retain the same strength. This contributes to the significant weight reduction. Since bumper beams are located at the farthest points of the vehicle chassis in relation to the center of gravity, they affect the dynamic performance and responsiveness of the whole vehicle, especially during high-speed steering.
